Healthy Fats for Mental Illness

Do you know that complete nutrition also means diet with a suitable amount of fat?

Mind you, but not all fats are dangerous. As bad as the adverts may potray it, there are some fats that are very beneficial for human body. As such, no health-promoting diet would be complete without an adequate supply of healthy fats.

Omega-3-fatty acids in particular may be instrumental in maintaining healthy brain throughout life. Omega-3s, particularly a component named DHA, are present in the brain, so having them in our diet will be very beneficial.

Fatty fish is a particularly good source of DHA. Components of fatty acids in fish go straight to the synapses of nerve cells. That means they help neurons communicate with one another, which may have a positive effect on learning and memory.

Good source of Omega-3 fatty acids:

Cold-water fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines and tuna. Plant options include walnuts and flaxseed. Avocados as well as olive oil and canola are beneficial for other reasons too because they play a role in lowering Bad 'LDL' Cholesterol in the blood and help promote blood flow. So it is always wise to include them in your diet.
